TORONTO – Ready to have a baby? It’s time to pencil in a checkup – with your dentist.
Oral care is doubtless not first on the priority list when it comes to plotting a pregnancy. But question a doctor who has helped about 6,500 women bring their new bundles of joy into the world – including his honest share on camera – and he’ll tell you that taking care of teeth is key in helping ensure overall health.
High-risk pregnancy specialist Dr. Charles Hux, featured on the TLC series “A Baby Tale ,” said if a woman has had dental tribulations in the past, she certainly should see a dentist prior to the initiation of pregnancy.
Even if she hasn’t had tribulations with her teeth, it’s vital to have them checked to ensure here isn’t any work that needs to be done, as dental tribulations and decay can result in high risk of premature labour and delivery, he said.

“It’s not only perilous for pregnancy, it’s very perilous for progressive heart disease,” he added. “It’s associated with much earlier onset of severe – and perhaps sometimes fatal – heart disease by having teeth that are not taken care of.”
But further than medical checkups aren’t just limited to oral care. In “Nine Healthy Months,” Hux offers advice on staying healthy during and with pregnancy. It’s the first in what’s slated to be a series of books in the 21st Century Pregnancy series.

As for exercising even as pregnant, Hux recommends women make sure not to exceed three-quarters of their maximum heart rate. Exercising at the maximum heart rate robs the fetus of its habitual quantity of oxygen during that cycle , he said.
Hux said midway owing to the pregnancy, fainting spells are not uncommon. The uterus is “like a basketball,” weighing around 15 to 20 pounds, which puts pressure on the vena cava, the main blood vessel that runs up and down the back.
